Golf Quinta da Marinha is an unusual but demanding Robert Trent Jones golf course that is just a few minutes drive from Cascais. Unusual in that it boasts 6 par three holes and 5 par fives. Like many Trent Jones designs, water and sand have been cunningly placed to catch any wayward shot.

Golf Pestana Beloura - A pleasant golf course near Sintra and just a short drive from Cascais, formerly Golf Quinta da Beloura's it's main defence is the lakes and streams that come into play on a number of holes.

Golf Penha Longa - A spectacular and very demanding golf course set in the Sintra hills just a few minutes drive from Cascais. It is quite hilly and we therefore recommend you hire a buggy. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, all the holes are immaculate and many undulate from tee to green; they certainly tested Europe's best in 1994 and 1995 when the Portuguese Golf Open was held here.

Montado Golf Club is near the magnificent Palmela Castle, between Lisbon and Setubal. Here the aim was to create a golf course where club players of all levels would get maximum enjoyment.

Possibly one of the finest golf courses to have opened in Portugal in recent years, Golf Belas is located between the World Heritage resort of Sintra and the city of Lisbon. Although quite open, the fairways, tees and greens are immaculate. Overlooked by its splendid clubhouse, the golf course meanders through a natural valley and therefore many of the tees and greens are raised making club selection quite tricky.

Sam Torrance won the Portuguese Golf Open at Golf Troia. That's the good news. The bad news is that his winning score was only two under par, which gives you some indication of the rest of the scores. If Europe's finest struggled here, what can be said for mere mortals? The fact is Golf Troia is not so tough from the more advanced tee placements and if the wind is in abeyance, a reasonable score can be posted.

Ranked highly by the Peugeot Golf Guide, Golf Quinta do Peru is a very fine, mature golf course with many of its fairways lined by trees. However, whilst demanding, it is still a very fair test.

One hour to the north of Lisbon, Golden Eagle has been restored to it's former high standards that were set when it opened in blaze of glory in 1994. Originally designed by Rocky Roquemore, it is an immaculate golf course set in a beautiful landscape of pine woodland, eucalyptus trees and flora but in the late 90's it suffered through neglect.

This is a splendid, long golf course that combines links style holes with parkland. It is made even longer when the wind off the Atlantic is at its most spiteful. Holes 12 to 15 are a severe test as they run along the coastline; immaculate scenery but very demanding golf.

A stunning, relatively new Arthur Hills golf course (one of his first in Europe) adjacent to Quinta da Marinha. Considering the architect is American, we were surprised by the absence of any major water hazards; the golf course's main defence being the wind and the lightening fast greens.

Golf do Estoril - Not as long as its neighbouring Lisbon Coast golf courses but Golf Estoril is still one for the connoisseur. Challenging throughout, the chance of getting away with a bad shot is slim as one contends with tree lined fairways and annoyingly well placed hazards.

Golf Aroeira - One word sums up these two golf courses; outstanding! Without question one of the best golf venues in Europe. Aroeira I was host to the Portuguese Open Golf in 1996 and 1997 as well being a venue for the Ladies Qualifying school. It has just about everything; tree lined fairways, dogleg holes, water and sand.
