Golf Holidays in the Middle East? Fifteen years ago the very idea would have provoked golfers to smirk whilst trying to think of some politically incorrect punch line. Yet golf in the UAE (United Arab Emirates) is no joke. There is a golf holiday boom happening in Dubai that is evidenced by an ever increasing demand for starting times.

This is a place that has hosted most of the of the world’s best golfers. Tiger Woods, no less, received much attention when hitting golf balls from the rooftop helicopter pad of the world famous Burj al Arab Hotel, Dubai's celebrated landmark shaped like a mammoth sailboat; an all-suites hotel with gold-plated rooms that sell for about $1,500 per-night. Ouch! Fortunately there are other first class hotels that are less brutal with your bank account. And as the Dubai golf craze booms, the existing hotels and golf courses plus those being built are created with the intention to rival the world’s very best.

In the past Dubai was an outpost consisting of a couple of thousand people. Then, in the late sixties, oil was discovered giving the ruling Royal Family an almost endless reserve of cash to build what has become a spotless, contemporary, model city with no taxes, free health care, and a zero-crime rate. Respect for the local customs is however important and the authorities won't put up with disrespect to women, religious intolerance and/or drugs. Alcohol (in moderation) and casual wear on the other hand are perfectly acceptable.

A note of caution; summer temperatures officially reach up to 52 degrees. Fortunately they aren't always so extreme and you can be very comfortable on the golf course in the winter months and early spring. Not so in July and August and so we joke (with a hint of seriousness) about it being a matter of time before they build a massive, air conditioned, indoor golf course.

We have marked Dubai as one of the best emerging golf holiday destinations in the world but we also realise you'll have to see it to believe us.
